“Research establishing the benefits and role of palliative care have led to rapid adoption of the clinical specialty and improved outcomes across millions of persons with serious illness. And yet, the evidence base and field are still quite young. For example, I was the first-ever Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellow at Mayo Clinic – Rochester in 2009. A mere 14 years ago.

A culmination of events have led to the need – now more than ever – for defined infrastructure and funding for research in palliative care. Fortunately, many have stepped up from the Patient Quality of Life Coalition (e.g., American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC), Cambia Health Solutions, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) to work with The National Institutes of Health to create a solution.

Very excited that a notice of intent to fund a Consortium for Palliative Care Research Across the Cancer Continuum (NOFO later this year, applications due early 2024) was just released.”
