Valerie Yang: What started out as an academic collaboration is now available as a treatment option for soft tissue sarcoma patients

Valerie Yang, Consultant Medical Oncologist at National Cancer Centre Singapore, shared a post by NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine on LinkedIn, adding:

“Extremely grateful to the entire team. This work would not have been possible if not for the hard work of all our collaborators both scientific and clinical, as well as all our clinical research coordinators and those in my laboratory all working hand in hand. This was a feat with such seamless collaboration across so many institutions in Singapore. What started out as an academic collaboration is now available as an option to patients.”

Quoting NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine‘s post:

“Major step forward in soft tissue sarcoma (STS) treatment!
A collaborative study by researchers from ASTAR, NCCS, NUS, and KYAN Technologies—published in npj Precision Oncology—demonstrates how QPOP, a precision medicine platform, can rapidly identify effective drug combinations for this rare cancer type.
Led by Asst Prof Valerie Yang, National Cancer Centre Singapore, A*STAR Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (A*STAR IMCB), with key contributions from Senior Research Fellow Dr Tan Boon Toh from NUS Medicine, The N.1 Institute for Health, Dr Edward Kai-Hua Chow, National University of Singapore, and Dr Xing Yi Woo, Bioinformatics Institute, A*STAR, the study found >70% accuracy in matching patient responses and revealed a promising drug combo AZD5153 + pazopanib, in suppressing a difficult oncogene.

The study, led by Dr. Yang and supported by researchers across ASTAR, NCCS, NUS, and KYAN Technologies, highlights the use of QPOP—a functional combinatorial precision medicine platform—to rapidly identify effective drug combinations in STS, a rare and difficult-to-treat cancer.

Among its findings: QPOP matched patient responses with over 70% accuracy and revealed a promising drug combination—AZD5153 and pazopanib—that effectively suppresses a challenging oncogene.
