Sandeep Juneja: How a New TB Treatment Was Scaled in Record Time

Sandeep Juneja, Sr. VP – Market Access at TB Alliance, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Suerie Moon et al, published in BMJ Global Health:

“Speed By Design: An Independent Case Study On How A New TB Treatment Was Scaled in Record Time and Lessons Learned

A new study from the Geneva Graduate Institute, published in BMJ Global Health, examines what it took to move TB Alliance’s BPaL/M rapidly from innovation to access at scale.

When I first started working in global health, it was widely accepted that innovations could take nearly a decade to reach patients at scale.

This study shows that timeline is not inevitable.

By aligning regulatory pathways, market shaping, and country implementation from the outset, uptake of new DR-TB treatments reached over 100 countries within three years – far faster than historical norms.

What stands out is that speed was not driven by any single intervention, but by deliberate coordination across the system.

And that this work started during clinical development is a useful reminder that access is not the final step of innovation. It must be designed alongside it. We are working to making the process even faster which will be a different challenge, but the lessons so far are instructive. For those working in global health, the paper is well worth a read.

Grateful to Suerie Moon, Kaitlin Large, Marcela Cristina Fogaça Vieira, and the Geneva Graduate Institute team for putting structure around a challenge many of us have been working through in practice.”
