Dario Trapani, Medical Oncologist at European Institute of Oncology (IEO), Researcher at Department of Oncology and Hemato-Oncology at University of Milan, shared a post on LinkedIn about an article he and colleagues authored:
”A NEW MANDATE FOR CANCER CARE LEADERSHIP.
The new The Lancet Group Commission: The Human Crisis in Cancer Care is out, and it reveals a truth we can no longer ignore. Despite extraordinary scientific progress, millions of people with cancer still experience care that feels fragmented, impersonal, and at times harmful.
The biggest crisis in cancer today is not solely biological, it’s human
Across the world, people living with cancer face critical gaps:
- Fragmented, Rushed Care: Systems are optimized for throughput, not human connection.
- Unmet Distress: Widespread but unmet psychological and emotional needs.
- Access Barriers: Late or no access to essential palliative care.
- Toxicity Beyond Treatment: Significant financial and time toxicity.
- Unprepared Clinicians: Education models leave providers unprepared for the relational and psychosocial needs of patients.
A Key Message for Leaders in Oncology, Health Policy, and Medical Education: We cannot change cancer care without fundamentally changing how we educate and train our workforce.
This is a call to action for health systems, educators, and policymakers globally.
Let’s match our scientific advancements with truly human centered care.
