Galip Can Uyar: Can Metformin Improve Outcomes in Metastatic Hormone-sensitive Prostate Cancer?
Galip Can Uyar, Medical Doctor at Etlik City Hospital, shared a post on X:
“Just published in The Lancet Oncology: Can metformin, a cheap and widely used antidiabetic, improve outcomes in metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC)?
In this large phase 3 STAMPEDE trial (n=1874), adding metformin to standard of care did not improve OS in the overall population (HR: 0.91, p=0.15). However, in patients with high-volume disease, metformin showed a significant survival benefit (HR: 0.79, p=0.0072).
Importantly, metformin also mitigated ADT-induced metabolic toxicity (↓ weight gain, glucose, LDL, HbA1c)—across all subgroups. A low-cost intervention with dual metabolic and potential oncologic impact?”
