Susanna Fletcher Greer: Empathy and Clarity in Science Communication
Susanna Fletcher Greer, Chief Scientific Officer of The V Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I am on my flight home from Italy, where my son and I spent a week and a half navigating trains, trattorias, and tangled directions with our (very!) limited Italian, and a whole lot of gratitude for locals who met us with patience, kindness, and curiosity.
What struck me most wasn’t how we got where we needed to go. It was how people made space for our trying. They slowed down, gestured, smiled. They helped us feel capable, not clueless. Even though we often were!
It reminds me of the work I do every day in science communication, with researchers, patients and families facing cancer. Scientific language can be just as overwhelming as a foreign one. But when we make the effort to meet people where they are, when we translate without condescending, we empower them.
Whether I’m helping a family understand treatment options, or coaching a researcher on how to talk about their research more clearly, I see the power of clarity and empathy every day. At the V Foundation, I’m proud to lead efforts that make research accessible. Because understanding science shouldn’t be a luxury. And communication, like travel, is always more powerful when it’s human.”
