To Record or Not to Record – Olumide Ofinran on Patient Requests During Cancer Diagnosis Consultations

Olumide Ofinran, Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialist in Gynaecological Oncology at the Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“To Record or Not to Record: Breaking Bad News.
I’ve long provided written summaries after delivering cancer diagnoses, but recently a patient asked if they could record our conversation.
Is a life-changing diagnosis something that should be captured as it’s said? Recording ensures patients can revisit complex information when the initial shock subsides. Would I unconsciously alter my delivery knowing my words were being recorded?
Research shows that patients typically recall less than a third of what’s discussed. This reality makes our CNS team absolutely invaluable; they provide that crucial follow-up where forgotten questions emerge and misunderstandings are clarified.
I’m curious, do you allow patients to record consultations? Has it improved understanding or created unexpected challenges in your practice?”
