Afreen Shariff: How Lack of Common Language Creates Confusion in Medicine

Afreen Shariff, Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:

“Exciting week! Two studies I’ve had the privilege to lead over the years have been accepted for publication:

1. International Delphi Consensus on Endocrine Immune-Related Toxicities – Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer.

In the world of toxicities, I often say, ‘We’re all trying to convey the same thing but speaking different languages.’ This lack of common language creates confusion across specialties, diseases, and continents.

  • The Solution: Bring together global experts to agree on nomenclature, diagnostic criteria, and management for endocrine irAEs.
  • The Outcome: A unified consensus that helps us classify patients accurately and deliver the care they deserve.

Grateful to Project Data Sphere and CEO Roundtable on Cancer for supporting this work, and to the incredible core team and international contributors who made this possible.

2. Predictive Model for Hospitalization Following Immunotherapy. AI in Precision Oncology Douglas Flora, MD, FACCC, LSSBB.

We built a machine learning model leveraging hundreds of data points to prioritize high-risk patients for rapid intervention by the Duke Cancer Institute Urgent Access Team—and we tested the intervention in real time!

This was true team science with Duke Institute for Health Innovation and amazing collaborators like Mark Sendak, Noah Prizant, Will Knechtle, MBA, MPH, and many others.”
