Jasmin Hundal: Can a WhatsApp-based remote exercise program improve the quality of life for older adults with cancer?

Jasmin Hundal, Hematology Oncology Fellow at Cleveland Clinic, shared an article on LinkedIn:

“Can a WhatsApp-based remote exercise program improve the quality of life for older adults with cancer?

Thank you to Dr. Paulo Bergerot for allowing me to be part of this innovative study, Enhancing quality of life in older adults with cancer: Outcomes of a 12-week supervised remote exercise intervention.

A 12-week supervised remote exercise program delivered via WhatsApp and the Vedius platform significantly improved health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and reduced symptom burden in older adults (65+) undergoing systemic cancer treatment.

Key outcomes:

  • HRQOL scores improved from 83.2 to 94.4 (p = 0.001).
  • Meaningful reductions in pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and more.
  • 88% adherence to prescribed exercises.
  • High patient satisfaction, particularly with the program’s convenience and flexibility.

This single-arm pilot trial demonstrates the feasibility and acceptability of remote, low-cost exercise interventions for older adults, even in resource-limited settings.

As we work to close the gap in supportive cancer care, studies like this underscore the power of scalable, digital lifestyle interventions, especially when tailored to meet patients where they are!

Future directions: Integration with nutrition, mental health, and survivorship services.”
