Sharon Kapambwe: Cervical cancer and HIV are diseases of gender inequality
Sharon Kapambwe, Technical Officer of Cancer Control at the World Health Organization, shared a recent article on LinkedIn:
“Almost a decade ago, as I went through histopathology reports in the program, I noted more and more young women coming with advanced cervical cancer.
This was already somehow known from previous publications in many programs. However, we needed stronger policy measures for women living with HIV to be screened and those accessing cervical cancer screening services to know their HIV status.
HPV infection and HIV is relationship is equally well established.
The article below led to pushing of a policy move to more targeted cervical cancer screening for WLHIV in Zambia.
Both cervical cancer and HIV are diseases of gender inequality. Gender equality is grounded in human rights.
Every woman has a right to live a life free from cervical cancer. Take the rights path.”
