A Presidency Built Around Equity And Scientific Progress

At the center of Lordick’s presidential mission is a clear commitment to advancing oncology through education, science-driven innovation and patient-centered care. His vision places strong emphasis on equity, with the goal of ensuring that advances in cancer care reach patients across different regions, health systems and backgrounds.

In his presidential mission statement, Lordick highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration and ensuring that every patient can benefit from progress in oncology, regardless of geography or background. This message reflects a broader challenge facing modern cancer care: scientific breakthroughs are moving quickly, but their real-world impact depends on access, implementation and global cooperation.

Bridging Innovation And Real-World Oncology Practice

Florian Lordick’s presidency will build on the ESMO Roadmap 2030 and reinforce the Society’s role as a global driver of progress in oncology. His programme focuses on aligning scientific excellence with equitable access, particularly in settings where innovation does not always translate into routine clinical practice.

His vision recognizes that advances in molecular biology, immunology and data science are reshaping oncology. These fields are creating new opportunities for prevention, diagnosis, treatment selection and long-term cancer care. At the same time, Lordick has emphasized that innovation can widen existing disparities when access and implementation are not addressed deliberately.

This balance between scientific progress and practical delivery is expected to be one of the defining themes of his leadership.

Equity Beyond Patient Care

A central pillar of Florian Lordick’s vision is equity in oncology. His programme expands the meaning of equity beyond patient access to treatment and includes career development, research opportunities and leadership representation within the oncology community.

He noted that differences related to geography, gender, socioeconomic status and professional background must be actively addressed to support a sustainable and diverse oncology workforce. This approach places professional inclusion alongside patient-centered care, recognizing that the future of oncology depends not only on treatments and guidelines, but also on the people who deliver, study and shape cancer care.

Patients As Active Partners In Cancer Care

Patient-centered oncology is another major priority in Lordick’s presidential programme. His vision includes strengthening the role of patients as active partners in care, research and policy.

This includes support for structured training programmes for patient advocates and greater integration of patient-reported outcomes into clinical practice. By placing patient experience closer to decision-making, Lordick’s programme reflects a growing movement in oncology toward care models that measure not only survival and response, but also quality of life, symptom burden and the lived experience of cancer.

Education, Precision Oncology And Digital Transformation

Education and innovation remain core elements of Lordick’s agenda. His programme emphasizes precision oncology, prevention and survivorship, supported by interdisciplinary collaboration to help translate scientific advances into clinical practice.

Digital transformation is also expected to play an important role. Lordick’s vision includes the use of artificial intelligence, real-world data and digital health tools to support education, guideline development and dissemination of innovation. In this context, digital tools are positioned not as a replacement for clinical expertise, but as part of a broader effort to improve how knowledge is shared and applied across oncology.

Strengthening ESMO’s Global Role

Lordick also highlighted the importance of expanding ESMO’s global engagement. Describing oncology as a global discipline, he emphasized the need for stronger international collaboration to support knowledge transfer, guideline adaptation and research.

This global outlook aligns with ESMO’s wider mission to serve as a reference point for oncology education, scientific exchange and clinical standards. Under Lordick’s future presidency, this role is expected to continue with a strong focus on access, collaboration and adaptation across different healthcare settings.

A Longstanding Contributor To ESMO

Florian Lordick has been closely involved in ESMO’s work for many years. He served on the ESMO Executive Board as Director of Education from 2020 to 2022, contributing to the Society’s educational strategy and its role in oncology training.

He also held key scientific leadership positions, including leading the Gastrointestinal Cancer Faculty from 2014 to 2018 and contributing to programme development for the ESMO Congress in 2016. Since 2019, he has been a member of the ESMO–ASCO Global Curriculum Task Force, supporting the development of international standards for medical oncology training.

A Career Focused On Gastrointestinal Cancer Research

Throughout his career, Florian Lordick has made major contributions to gastrointestinal cancer research, clinical trials and international guideline development. His work has helped advance evidence-based approaches in oesophageal and gastric cancer, including through his role as first author of ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines.

He has also contributed to scientific communication and editorial leadership as Co-Editor-in-Chief of ESMO Gastrointestinal Oncology and as a member of several international editorial boards.

Looking Ahead To ESMO 2029–2030

As ESMO President-Elect for 2027–2028, Florian Lordick will join the ESMO Executive Board on 1 January 2027. His presidency for 2029–2030 is set to focus on education, scientific progress, equitable access, patient empowerment and the future direction of cancer care.

“My vision is for ESMO to remain the global reference in oncology: driving education and scientific progress, ensuring equitable access, empowering patients, and shaping the future of cancer care,” Lordick concluded.
