Tracey O’Brien: Celebrating the Expert and Compassionate People This National Palliative Care Week
Tracey O’Brien, Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of Cancer Institute NSW, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In Australia, around 40 percent of people receiving palliative care have cancer. People like 70-year-old James, who was diagnosed with terminal thyroid cancer ten years ago.
Palliative care is not about dying, it is about helping people manage their symptoms and feel safe, supported and able to do the things that bring them joy.
For James, the incredible team at Far West Local Health District are helping him do just that. His words say more than I ever could.
‘The palliative care staff are unbelievable, I can contact them day or night – nothing is too hard. They’ll do anything for you, I mean anything, from making sure I eat well to organising safety rails so I can still enjoy my backyard. You could be having the worst day, and by the time they leave, I am on top of the world, they are a blessing and a god send.’ James said.
This National Palliative Care Week, let’s celebrate the expert and compassionate people working across our health system who are helping people like James live their best life possible.”
