Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo: Childhood cancer has long been overlooked in global strategies – It is time to change that
Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo, EVP and Chair, Department of Global Pediatric Medicine at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“For the first time, a call to action has been made to include children with chronic and catastrophic diseases – particularly those facing childhood cancer – within the global agenda on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). This pivotal moment comes as preparations are underway for the 4th United Nations High-Level Meeting on NCDs.
Led by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, this marks a significant shift in global health priorities. Despite being one of the most treatable yet underfunded NCDs, childhood cancer has long been overlooked in global strategies. It is time to change that.
Together with our partners, we are calling for:
Inclusion of childhood cancer in the 2025 Political Declaration on NCDs.
Investment and implementation in proven initiatives, such as the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC) and the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines.
Bold action to achieve at least 60% survival rates for children with cancer by 2030.
Millions of lives depend on these efforts. The inclusion of children in the global NCD agenda is not just a matter of equity – it is an opportunity to transform the future of global health.
We are proud to stand alongside our partners as we work toward a world where every child has the chance to survive and thrive.”
