AORTIC Notices: Cancer and Conflict in Africa – A spotlight on The Sahel
The Sahel region in Africa stretches from Senegal and Gambia on the Atlantic coast through Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Sudan to the northwestern part of Ethiopia and Eritrea on the Red Sea coast.
Many of the 16 African countries in conflict are contiguous, stretching from the western Sahel through the Horn of Africa, encompassing the Lake Chad Basin and Great Lakes regions.
Climate change, conflict and political instability have resulted in the biggest humanitarian crises in the world, severely disrupting healthcare. The cancer care needs of conflict- affected populations continues to be a low priority in international and continental responses to the crises in the Sahel.
In this session at London Global Cancer Week, AORTIC Africa will be shining a light on cancer care in the Sahel, hearing from those practicing in these countries and other stakeholders about what the future holds for the Region.
