Christina Mangurian: In our latest study, we found that 1 in 10 of UC San Francisco faculty are informal caregivers of seriously ill loved ones

Christina Mangurian, Professor & Vice Dean University of California, San Francisco – School of Medicine, made the following post on Twitter:

“In our latest study, we found that 1 in 10 of UC San Francisco faculty are informal caregivers of seriously ill loved ones. The ratio goes up to 1 in 6 for physician mothers! The highest prevalence was among full Professors–likely due to elder care.

In our mixed methods study, one respondent said: ‘There should be the same services for significant caregiving responsibilities-such as elderly parent care-as there is for childcare.’ I agree!

Given the increase in our elderly population, we need paid leave for elder care.

Grateful for to co-author, colleague & leader VPAA Brian Alldredge for his work to support all of us UC San Francisco; and of course with UC San Francisco Medicine, fellow Carolyn Rennel, Snehal Murthy, Margaret Handley, UC San Francisco Biostatistics,  Meghan Morris, Priyav Dahiya, Reshma Jagsi, and Jen Kerns.”
