Thomas Hartung: The Definition of Cure in Colon Cancer

Thomas Hartung, Professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, posted on X by David Palma, Radiation Oncologist at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), adding:

“This is such an important discussion. Patients ask every single day if they can say they are cured, and no one really has an answer and even even if they do, what does a cure mean?

I agree with Dave Palma here recurrence risk less than 0.5% is a pretty unimpeachable cut off, as that’s far lower than the incident of an unrelated secondary primary and gives us a pretty good benchmark or framework for discussion with patients.”

Quoting David Palma‘s post:

“Great paper in JAMA Oncology assessing the time period for cure after for colon cancer. It’s 6 years. ‘Cure’ is defined as when the risk of recurrence is <0.5%. Very reasonable.”
