New MASCC Recommendations to Standardize Mucositis Assessment – Supportive Oncology Research Group

Supportive Oncology Research Group (SORG) shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Ragda Abdalla-Aslan et al. published in eClinicalMedicine:

How do we actually assess mucositis? Turns out… not very consistently.

Mucositis remains one of the most common and burdensome side effects of cancer therapy, yet the tools we use to measure it are applied in highly variable ways. This inconsistency makes it harder to compare studies, synthesise evidence, and ultimately translate new discoveries into better supportive care.

The The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Mucositis Study Group (MSG) recently developed a set of recommendations to bring clarity and consistency to mucositis assessment across both clinical practice and clinical trials.

What they did:
Surveyed global MSG members to capture current practice, challenges, and preferences. These insights fed into a two-round Delphi process, where experts reached consensus on 91 of 100 recommendations.

What they found:
• Assessment remains heavily clinician-driven, with minimal use of PROMs
• WHO and CTCAE are still the workhorses for clinician assessment
• Clear consensus emerged for the best tools in specific contexts (see full paper for breakdown)

Why this matters:
For the first time, we now have practical, consensus-driven guidance that can be used globally to standardize mucositis assessment. This will:

  • streamline comparison of datasets
  • strengthen evidence synthesis
  • support meaningful patient-centered outcomes
  • accelerate translation of supportive-care research into practice.”
