Saikat Nandy’s Journey from Biostatistics Research to Mentorship – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital shared on LinkedIn:

“A family history of cancer and chronic disease first drew Saikat Nandy, toward wanting to understand disease risk and ways to improve outcomes for patients and families facing serious diagnoses. Over time, that motivation expanded beyond research and into a new mission: helping prepare the next generation of scientists.

After moving from Kolkata, India, to the United States to study actuarial science, Nandy transitioned into biostatistics, where he could apply statistical methods to questions of disease risk and patient outcomes. At St. Jude, he joined the Department of Biostatistics as a postdoctoral fellow, studying how radiation affects brain development in children with medulloblastoma.

His family experiences remained a driving force throughout that work. When his mother was successfully treated for breast cancer following an early diagnosis, it reinforced his interest in finding new ways to improve outcomes for future patients.

‘My pursuit of ‘earlier than early detection‘ reshaped how I thought about impact more broadly,’ Nandy said. ‘It evolved into a commitment not only to research, but also to training the next generation of scientists who will develop the tools to predict, prevent and change outcomes before disease ever begins.’

Through the Career Advancement Program (CAP), Nandy worked with the STEMM Education and Outreach team, gaining experience in curriculum development, instructional design and mentorship. The fellowship gave him an opportunity to explore education and training as another way to contribute to the future of medicine.

‘Mentorship has been an integral part of my journey, and I feel a deep responsibility to give back because of the mentors who have shaped my path,’ said Nandy.

Today, Nandy is an assistant professor in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where he teaches biostatistics and helps prepare future biomedical researchers. His journey shows how advancing medicine depends not only on new discoveries, but also on investing in the scientists who will make them.”
