Jiya Patira: A Journey Through Clinical Research at ICR

Jiya Patira, Clinical Trial Assistant at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) shared a post on LinkedIn:

“To mark six months of my placement at the The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), I had the fantastic opportunity to attend the Drug Development Unit (DDU) Student Symposium.

The symposium brought together experts from across the clinical research industry to share insights into how early phase cancer trials are designed, delivered, and supported.

Across the two days, we explored many aspects of the clinical trial process -from regulatory approvals and trial set-up to understanding the patient’s journey from consent through to trial closure.

I found it particularly interesting to hear perspectives from international centres such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Clínica Universidad de Navarra, and Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology, and learn about how global collaboration drives progress in cancer research.

Other sessions explored the wider research ecosystem, including the role of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres (ECMC) network in supporting translational research.

We also learned about how emerging technologies such as digital pathology can assist in diagnosing patients faster and how artificial intelligence can help researchers design complex clinical trials through the use of tools like digital twins to investigate treatments for rare diseases.

It was an inspiring experience, and a great opportunity to learn more about the many different roles involved in turning research into new cancer therapies for patients!

A huge thank you to all the speakers for sharing their experiences and the Drug Development Unit at the ICR and The Royal Marsden for organizing this event!”
