Haitham Shaheen: The Global Impact of ESMO Leadership Programs

Haitham Shaheen, Lecturer of Clinical Oncology at Suez Canal University Egypt, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Over the past year, the ESMO Leadership Program has taken me far beyond my usual world of oncology clinics, MDTs, research projects, and clinical trials.

This final module in Lugano was a reminder that leadership is not only about scientific expertise. It is also about communication, collaboration, listening, understanding different perspectives, and building meaningful connections.

Coming from a clinical and academic oncology background, I expected to learn about leadership. What I did not expect was how much I would learn from the people around me.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been learning alongside an extraordinary group of colleagues from around the world. Every participant brought a unique background, different challenges, fresh ideas, and inspiring experiences. Representing different countries, healthcare systems, cultures, and professional backgrounds, our cohort truly reflected the global nature of modern oncology.

Some of the most valuable lessons came not from the classroom, but from conversations with colleagues working in different countries and healthcare systems. These exchanges broadened my perspective and reminded me how much we can learn from one another.

Beyond the workshops and sessions, I leave with something equally valuable: new friendships, new perspectives, and a global network of future oncology leaders.

A heartfelt thank you to ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology for investing in the development of the next generation of oncology leaders and for creating such a unique and inspiring programme.

Looking forward to celebrating our graduation together at the ESMO Congress in Madrid, In Shaa Allah.

A special thank you to my fellow participants who made this journey so memorable:

Guilherme Nader Marta, Laure-Anne Teuwen, Cinta Hierro Carbó, Ana Tecic Vuger, Elisa Agostinetto, Alberto Puccini, Vlad Afrăsânie, Veronica Salais Michaus, Daniel Musse, Jia Jenny Liu, Julia Dixon-Douglas, Edmond Kwan, Sophia Wong, Shanila Ahmed, Alicia-Marie Conway, Rille Pihlak.

It was a privilege learning alongside such a diverse and inspiring group of colleagues. Thank you for the discussions, ideas, challenges, friendships, and shared experiences.

I look forward to following your future achievements and hopefully collaborating again in the years ahead.”
