Giuseppe Banna, Consultant Medical Oncologist at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Our new international, real-world validation study of the Meet-URO score has just been published in The Oncologist Journal, analysing a large cohort of 1,418 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) receiving first-line immunotherapy combinations.
In clinical oncology, we often rely on comparing c-index values to judge the superiority of a prognostic model. Looking strictly at the numbers, the absolute difference between the Meet-URO score and the standard IMDC criteria might seem modest. However, the true clinical value goes far beyond absolute statistical concordance.
The real strength of the Meet-URO score, which integrates IMDC criteria with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and bone metastases, lies in its capacity to refine outcome predictions. Dissecting the heterogeneity within intermediate-risk patients and accurately stratifying extreme prognostic classes, it provides clinicians with a much sharper tool for daily decision-making and patient counselling.
Validating such an accessible tool opens up key perspectives for the future: not only by optimising stratification in upcoming clinical trials, but also by serving as a bridge toward molecular definition and precision oncology in mRCC.
A huge thank you to Sara Elena Rebuzzi, Aruni Ghose, Alessio Signori, and all the international co-authors and centres whose collaborative efforts made this study possible.”
