American Cancer Society shared a post on Facebook:
“Diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma at eight, Mairead was inspired by her healthcare team to become a nurse at the same hospital where she was treated. At 25, she faced stage IV breast cancer, which changed her path from caregiver back to patient.
‘Being a patient now, after working in the unit that I did, has really given me a lot of strength to go through my own journey,’ she shares. ‘I always try to reflect and think about my pediatric cancer warriors and take their strength and use it for my own journey.’
What her pediatric patients taught her still resonates:
‘The biggest thing they taught me is resilience. I try to draw on their strength—something I really admire and try to bring into my own journey.’
Her daily goal remains simple but powerful:
‘Wake up and be the best version of myself, making a positive impact—whether that’s bringing my nurse a bagel and making her day, or just the little things that make all the difference.’
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s turn awareness into action by recognizing how shared experiences create stronger caregivers and more compassionate care.
