Alberto Puccini: What it Means to Grow as an Oncologist Within a Broader International Community

Alberto Puccini, Medical Oncologist at Humanitas Research Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Over the past year, The ESMO Leadership Programme has been one of the most enriching experiences of my professional life so far.

Through its different modules, from leadership development and communication training to practical workshops and group discussions, I had the chance to reflect on what it means to grow as an oncologist within a broader international community.

The final module in Lugano brought many of these elements together. It reminded me that leadership in oncology is not only about clinical expertise, research, or scientific knowledge. It is also about how we communicate, listen, build trust, manage complexity, and take responsibility within our teams and institutions.

I particularly appreciated learning and implementing Daring Leadership that helped translate concepts like values, trust, vulnerability, and resilience into concrete areas for reflection and growth. All thanks to a great and incredible coach Terri Creeden!

Sharing this path with colleagues from different healthcare systems, cultures, and professional backgrounds made the experience even richer, adding perspectives that went beyond the formal sessions.

I leave this year with new tools, new perspectives, and a stronger awareness of the importance of collaboration, trust, and shared responsibility in shaping the future of oncology.

My sincere thanks to ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology for investing in the next generation of oncology leaders and for creating such a valuable programme.

A special thank you to my fellow participants, who made this journey so stimulating and meaningful: Rille Pihlak, Elisa Agostinetto, Guilherme Nader Marta, Laure-Anne Teuwen, Cinta Hierro Carbó, Ana Tecic Vuger, Vlad Afrăsânie, Veronica Salais Michaus, Daniel Musse, Jia Jenny Liu, Julia Dixon-Douglas, Edmond Kwan, Sophia Wong, Shanila Ahmed, Alicia-Marie Conway, Haitham Shaheen

And thanks again to our amazing coaches Terri Creeden Jo Filshie Browning Kate Minogue Peter Sandbach!

Also a special thanks to Teresa Amaral, Francesca Longo and Milena Marzano for the organisation of this program. We won’t be here without you!

Looking forward to meeting again and celebrating our graduation at the ESMO Congress in Madrid.”
