Lisa A. Lacasse: Expanding access to clinical trials is critical
Karen Knudsen shared a post by Lisa A. Lacasse on LinkedIn, adding:
“Increased enrollment in critical trials is key to accelerating progress against cancer!”
Quoting Lisa A. Lacasse’s post:
“Expanding access to clinical trials is critical. Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Institute, Dr. Kimryn Rathmell’s editorial responds to recently released research authored by American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)’s Dr. Mark Fleury highlighting the discrepancy between increased enrollment and remaining disparities in treatment trial access. Find Dr. Fleury’s research here.
Differential enrollment is evident between NCI-designated and non-NCI sites, shedding light on the pivotal role of personnel and infrastructure at facilities. A decisive step towards progress lies in robust investments in the NCI’s budget, such as efforts to increase community trial capacity.
As a commitment to generate solutions, the NCI is assembling an Ad Hoc Working Group, created to enhance community clinical trial participation – a commendable dedication to patient-focused approaches.
As a part of the broader National Cancer Plan, these findings support the goal to reduce cancer death rates by half through improved trial access. The American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) stand ready to help the NCI develop and implement strategies to improve trial capacity.
“Expand research infrastructure for all types of clinical and observational studies, developing and streamlining methods to increase access to participation for all.” -National Cancer Plan.”
