Nirmala Bhoo Pathy: Climbing the Authorship Ladder
Nirmala Bhoo Pathy shared a post by Ophira Ginsburg on LinkedIn:
“Climbing the Authorship Ladder! First and last author positions in global cancer research signify equity and on a more personal note, career advancement.
By analyzing trends in first and last authorships in published literature, a study led by the ever-brilliant and bold Miriam Mutebi and Ophira Ginsburg has shed light on the extent of gender disparities in global cancer research.
This important work underscores the need for efforts to promote gender equity in global oncology research and prioritisation of interventions aimed at increasing the representation of women in these key author positions.
Congratulations to the amazing team for this brilliant piece- Nazik Hammad, Erica Liebermann, Verna Vanderpuye, Winnie So, Richard Sullivan, Julie S. Torode and Grant Lewison.”
Quoting Ophira Ginsburg’s post:
“Just out! Our new paper on sex and authorship in global cancer research, led by the amazing amazing Miriam Mutebi.
Key findings:
- Our analysis of 56 countries’ outputs, in 2009, revealed that females were the first authors in 37.2% and last authors in 23.3% of papers. In 2019, females were the first author in 41.6% and last author in 29.4% of papers.
- From 2009 to 2019, the highest proportion of females as first and last authors were from low-income and middle-income countries in Latin America and Eastern Europe.
- Females were more likely to publish in lower impact journals and were less likely to be cited compared to males.
Stay tuned for more from The Lancet Commission on Women, Power, and Cancer!”
