Alex Bick: Excited to share All of Us Research program’s flagship genomics paper
Alex Bick, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the Division of Genetic Medicine, shared on X/Twitter:
“Excited to share All of Us Research program’s flagship genomics paper describing 245,388 clinical-grade genome sequences encompassing >1 billion genetic variants published today in Nature.
All of Us Research resource is unique in its diversity as three quarters of participants are from communities that are historically under-represented in biomedical research and about half are individuals from under-represented racial and ethnic minorities.
We performed a number of analyses characterizing the new genetic variants identified and confirming that we could reproduce well established genetic associations.
All of Us uses a unique ‘data passport’ model – based on a researcher’s authenticated identity, institutional affiliation, and training that takes about a day to complete.
In a companion paper from the National Human Genome Research Institute eMERGE consortium, Niall Lennon, Eimear Kenny et al show how All of Us Research data is useful for generating polygenic scores for diverse individuals.
In a separate companion paper with Pradeep Natarajan and UK Biobank we show how data can be combined across biobanks for large scale discovery efforts.
Separate from these efforts, our group at Vanderbilt Genetics Institute has already used All of Us Research data to power a number of exciting findings ranging from APOL1 kidney disease to somatic mutations.
None of this work would be possible without the partnership of the All of Us participants, NIH Staff, Biobank, Genome centers, Data and Research Center at Mayo Clinic, Broad Institute, Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center, Color, University of Washington, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Verily et al.”
