Sami (Papacek) Mansfield: What If Just One Workout Could Help Fight Cancer?
Sami (Papacek) Mansfield, Founder of Cancer Wellness for Life, shared on LinkedIn:
“What if just one workout could help fight cancer?
New research from Edith Cowan University found that a single session of resistance training or high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can boost special proteins called myokines in the body.
What are myokines?
They’re tiny messengers made by your muscles when you move.
And the exciting part? These messengers can slow down the growth of cancer cells – by up to 30%!
This study looked at breast cancer survivors, not healthy adults. And guess what? The same powerful response happened. Both resistance and HIIT workouts increased myokines right after just one session.
Why it matters:
- These muscle messengers help lower inflammation
- They support the immune system
- And they may reduce the risk of cancer coming back
The study also showed that building muscle and losing fat through regular exercise can lower inflammation even more—something diet alone can’t do.
Bottom line: We need to stop thinking of exercise as ‘extra’ in cancer care.
It’s medicine.
Providers: Are you including exercise in your how to manage side effects prescription?
Survivors: Have you noticed how exercise helps you feel stronger, sleep better, or appreciate having a tool of your own!
Let’s build a care plan that includes exercise as a powerful tool in the toolbox!”
