Zacharoula Sidiropoulou: Insights From 3,000 People Affected by Breast Cancer in a Report by Breast Cancer Now
Zacharoula Sidiropoulou, Senior Consultant Breast Surgical Oncologist at Hospital São Francisco Xavier, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Breast Cancer Now, the largest breast cancer charity in the United Kingdom, gathered insights from nearly 3,000 people affected by breast cancer across the UK and here are the results:
Emotional and Practical Impact:
- 70% of respondents said breast cancer had a long-term impact on their mental health.
- 1 in 3 felt they lacked adequate emotional support during or after treatment.
- Many reported feeling abandoned after treatment ended—especially those with secondary breast cancer.
Support and Information Gaps:
- Over half of respondents with secondary breast cancer felt under-informed about their condition.
- 40% of people at increased genetic risk said they struggled to access clear guidance on prevention and screening.
Systemic Challenges:
- Long waiting times and regional disparities in access to care were frequently cited.
Respondents called for:
- More funding for research
- Better access to treatments
- Improved post-treatment support
What People Want:
- A healthcare system that supports living well beyond diagnosis
- Greater recognition of secondary breast cancer
- More personalized care pathways
Are we sure we know what our patients need?
Are we sure we even hear our patients needs?
