Elisabetta Zanon: Great Discussion on How to Increase Oncology Clinical Trials in Europe at the World Cancer Series
Elisabetta Zanon, Chief Executive of the European Cancer Organisation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Great discussion on how to increase oncology clinical trials in Europe at the Economist Impact World Cancer Series event this week.
Thank you to with my fellow panellists: Elizabeth Sukkar, Maja Beck Popovic, Katarina Nedog, Veronika Rybanska, Nils Wilking for the engaging exchange.
Europe’s share of oncology clinical trials has almost halved in 15 years: from 41% in 2008 to 21% in 2023. This is very alarming and urgent action is needed to reverse this trend.
I stressed the importance of clinical trials for cancer patients who have exhausted all therapeutic options and for whom access to a clinical trial represent the last hope.
I made the following recommendations:
Reduce fragmentation of the regulatory framework – too many elements of the authorisation still remain at national level
Streamline rules for clinical trials conducted with companion diagnostic tests – the complexities of the IVD regulation should be addressed
Promote decentralised clinical trials to facilitate participation of patients living far away from comprehensive cancer centres – this would allow to reduce disparities
Make it easier for patients to be enrolled into clinical trials conducted in other EU Member States – there are no rules for this at EU level
Improve health literacy of patients so that they can be better equipped to participate in clinical trials – this would be particularly important for underrepresented communities”
