“One year ago in Kuala Lumpur.
Radition Therapists: “We are the face of radiation therapy”
On this 1st day at the @ESTROmeetsASIA conference in Kuala Lumpur, a compassionate & sophisticated presentation was given by A/Prof Sharon Wong, from the Singapore Institute of Technology.
Radiation Therapists do many things including taking the patient into the bunker and positioning the patient on the LINAC or radiation therapy machine. They also deliver the beam treatment.
As a patient, we don’t feel the beam. You can’t see the beam. The Radiation Therapist is thus the “face of radiation therapy”.
How they speak, enagage, and show care and support makes a big difference for the patient.
Sharon distinguished between three types of communication: Task Centred, Process Centred, Patient Centred.
She spoke of recognising & responding to the patient’s emotion and sharing power by offering information & choice.
AI is offering new opportunities to prioritise communication & patient engagement as we develop new models of care going forward.”
