” ‘Paying the Price for Distance: Travel-Driven Financial Toxicity Among Cancer Patients in Nepal’
In Nepal, the financial toxicity of cancer is associated with frequent travel from patients’ homes to treatment centers. Most cancer hospitals and specialized treatment facilities are concentrated in urban areas, particularly in the capital, Kathmandu. As a result, patients from rural and remote regions are compelled to travel long distances, often repeatedly for consultations, treatments, and follow-up visits.
This repeated travel leads to unexpectedly high out-of-pocket expenditures, not only for medical services but also for associated non-medical costs such as transportation, food, and accommodation.These indirect expenses, often overlooked in healthcare planning, contribute heavily to financial toxicity and place immense strain on patients and their families, many of whom already face economic hardship. Therefore, a robust policy leading to the decentralization of cancer centers in Nepal is mandatory.”
