Tracey O’Brien Highlights HPV Vaccine Equity Research Led by Michaela Hall

Tracey O’Brien, NSW Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of the Cancer Institute NSW, reshared a post by Cancer Institute NSW on LinkedIn, adding:

“Every six minutes, a life is saved thanks to vaccines.

While they are an essential part of preventative health care, not everyone has equal access to them.

Breaking down these inequities is the focus of Cancer Institute NSW Early Career Fellow Dr Michaela Hall’s research into cervical cancer, a disease that is set for elimination, thanks in great part to HPV vaccination.

Working closely with collaborators in Tanzania and Papua New Guinea, Dr Hall aims to optimise cervical cancer interventions, including HPV vaccination, for women with HIV in low to lower-middle income countries.

I encourage you to read more about Dr Hall’s research, which she hopes will help inform local and international health policy on HPV vaccination, cervical screening and HIV control.”

Quoting Cancer Institute NSW on LinkedIn:

“Research in NSW has the power to change the lives of people beyond our borders.

Low and lower-middle income countries bear most of the world’s dual cervical cancer and HIV burden.  Marking the start of World Immunisation Week, Dr Michaela Hall spoke with us about how she’s putting equity at the heart of her research to help change this.

Proudly supported by an Early Career Research Fellowship  from the Cancer Institute NSW, Dr Hall is assessing cervical screening and HPV vaccination strategies in women living with HIV.

Her research aims to inform how investing in cervical cancer control in vulnerable populations can benefit all women and communities.

‘To equitably move towards our goal for elimination [of cervical cancer], we need to make sure vulnerable populations are not left behind,’ Dr Hall said.

Read more about Dr Hall’s work and how it is key to the 2025 theme ‘Immunisation for all is humanly possible.”

Dr Michaela Hall’s research focuses on optimizing cervical cancer interventions for women with HIV in low-income regions, aiming to inform local and international health policy on HPV vaccination, cervical screening, and HIV control.
