Javier Martin-Broto: Collaborative Study Supports Mifamurtide Use in Osteosarcoma Treatment
Javier Martin-Broto, Sarcoma Medical Oncologist at the University Hospital Fundacion Jimenez Diaz, shared on LinkedIn about a recent paper by Emanuela Palmerini et al. published on JCO:
“This study, conducted jointly by the Italian Sarcoma Group (ISG) and the Spanish Sarcoma Group (GEIS), employed a risk-adapted treatment design to administer high-dose ifosfamide (in cases of poor response to MAP induction) and mifamurtide (in cases of P-glycoprotein expression) in patients with localized osteosarcoma.
The data suggest that mifamurtide may provide added benefit within this strategy. This study has facilitated the rational use of mifamurtide in our countries. The centralization of P-glycoprotein diagnosis at the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli (IOR) in Bologna is believed to have helped control variability in the technique.
The collaborative effort of pediatric and adult oncology teams from both countries has proven beneficial for our patients. This study should support the use of mifamurtide, at least under the conditions outlined in the trial. We extend our gratitude to Emanuela and the IOR team for their leadership in this study.”
