Berlinde von Kemp: Cardio-oncology – a key issue for all?
Berlinde von Kemp, Cardio-oncologist at UZ Brussels, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Cardio-oncology – a key issue for all?
The Cardio-Oncology session at the BELGIAN SOCIETY OF CARDIOLOGY congress earlier today was both deadly serious, as well as great fun. Round of applause for hosts Marie Moonen and Constantijn Franssen!
Say what?
Cancer patients clot, and cancer patients bleed. Leading lady Corinne Frere reminded us that we’re still in a relative data desert when it comes down to stroke prevention in AF in cancer patients, and even more so for antiplatelet therapies in this population. Blood-curdling, to say the least!
Cancer patients are under pressure! Cancer treatment-related hypertension: grossly underestimated, grossly undertreated, but such a huge risk. And don’t forget: this is not your everyday hypertension, Toto. Tell them Sofie Brouwers told you so.
ICI myocarditis and triple-M syndrome: if you thought it was complicated, Marthe Verhaert from Oncologisch Centrum UZ Brussel and delphine vervloet will show you that unleashing the brakes of your immune system can, and will, probably get worse. Eyes open for this one! – because ptosis is a major red flag.
But maybe the most important message of all: you’re never alone in this. Like we did for our talks but also what BITOX and the Cardio-Oncology Council stand for: reach out to expert haematologists and oncologists, and your own cardiology colleagues.
Team work makes the dream work !
[Also: notice the girl power speaker dream team? Who run the world?]”
