Who was Ratan Tata?

Ratan Tata (born December 28, 1937 – October 9, 2024) was a distinguished Indian industrialist and philanthropist, best known for his leadership of the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012. He transformed the conglomerate into a global powerhouse, overseeing major acquisitions like Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley Tea.

Education and Early Career

Tata studied architecture at Cornell University and attended Harvard Business School. He joined Tata Steel in 1962 and rose through the ranks.

Leadership and Legacy

Under his tenure, the Tata Group’s revenue grew significantly, and he launched the Tata Nano, aimed at affordable car ownership. A strong advocate for corporate social responsibility, Tata received numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. His modest demeanor and commitment to integrity left a lasting impact on Indian business and society.

Gaurav Narula, Professor of Pediatric Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital, is a Senior Clinical Lead and former Convener of the Pediatric Hemato-lymphoid Group. His research focuses on improving pediatric cancer outcomes using low-cost innovations, CAR T-cell technology developed with IIT-Bombay, and advanced supportive care. He also leads efforts to establish a cellular therapy center at Tata Memorial and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Pediatric Hematology Oncology Journal and Founder-Treasurer of the Immuno-Oncology Society of India.
