Brian Lawenda: How Are Your Patients Using LLMs in Oncology Practice?
Brian Lawenda, Radiation Oncologist at Advocate Radiation Oncology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“During the recent Chat GPT-5 product launch, this breast cancer patient shared her experience using AI to better understand her diagnosis and make a radiation oncology treatment decision when multiple radiation oncologists had different opinions on her case.
I often counsel my patients to be very careful when sharing personal health information on LLMs as most are not HIPAA compliant. Additionally, ‘hallucinations,’ while getting less frequent, limit their ability to be fully trusted. Nevertheless, just like they used Google search, our patients are using LLMs and find them even more helpful.
Eventually, everyone will have their own secure, reliable and trusted personal medical expert available to them 24/7. Once the liability issues are better addressed, expect to see these rolling out in the App Store.
How are your patients using LLMs in your oncology practice?”
