Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: Throwing back to meeting Dilyara Kaidarova during the 2019 WCLS

Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu shared a post on LinkedIn:

“My recent Oncodaily interview with Prof Dilyara Kaidarova prompted my throwback today.

I met her at the 2019 World Cancer Leaders’ Summit and Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) meeting hosted by the Kazakh Institute of Oncology and Radiology (KazIOR) in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, which Dilyara heads.

This event brought together global influencers, advocates, and leaders in cancer control and public health from governments, United Nations agencies, academia, non-profit organizations, and the private sector, representing over 80 countries.

We discussed how cancer detection, treatment, and care contribute to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

I recall being on a vibrant panel moderated by Julie Torode,
on the cervical cancer elimination agenda, which had just been launched.

Key issues addressed included the relationship between strong, sustainable, and people-centered health systems and the effective prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), promoting health equity in access to cancer services, and priority setting as part of the progressive realization of Universal Health Coverage(UHC).

During my interview with Dilyara, she said, many of the WCLS objectives have been met in Kazakhstan.

More cancer centers have come up and UHC is expanding.

During the summit, I also engaged formidable advocates, including HE Sika Kaboré, the former First Lady of Burkina Faso.

It seems like only yesterday when I was elected to the board of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and Princess Dina Mired was named President.

It’s been 6 active years and I have seen two more presidents steer the organization as it connects the global cancer community.

As I conclude my final term, I am filled with many emotions, but confident that my journey in cancer advocacy is far from over.”
