In this air there are fine particles such as PM2.5, too small to see, but capable of penetrating deep into the lungs and reaching the bloodstream, and have been linked to lung cancer and heart disease.
Outdoor air pollution is therefore classified as a carcinogen, the same category as tobacco smoke.

- Indoor smoking.
