“London Global Cancer Week | Session highlight
Survival is just the beginning.
Did you know that around two-thirds of childhood cancer survivors experience one or more late effects of cancer or its treatment? These can affect both physical and mental health, sometimes emerging years or even decades after treatment ends.
Survivors need individualised, lifelong follow-up care to identify, prevent and manage late effects, support their long-term health and protect their quality of life.
Beyond the Cure in Childhood Cancer: Survivorship, Care Transition, and Quality of Life will explore how healthcare systems can better support survivors over the long term, including through effective transitions from paediatric to adult care.
The session will bring together international experts, clinicians, survivors and parent advocates:
Opening remarks: Rob Pieters (International Society of Paediatric Oncology – SIOP President) and Alejandra Mendez (CCI President of the Board of Trustees)
Keynote speakers: Leontien Kremer (Prinses Máxima Centrum voor kinderoncologie) and Kate Johnson (Parent and CCI Board Member)
Panel discussion:
- Patrick Yip (Survivor and Lead of CCI’s SurNet) – Survivor Journey and Needs
- Maya Prasad (SIOP Survivorship Network) – Global Clinician Perspective
- Matthew Ehrhardt (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and COG) – Survivorship Guidelines
- Roberta Ortiz (World Health Organization) – Primary Care in LMICs
Closing remarks: Rob Pieters and Alejandra Méndez
The discussion will also highlight why survivors’ and families’ experiences must inform the care and support available long after treatment ends.
Date: 5 November | 13:00–14:30 GMT, Online
