Dario Trapani: Rethinking How We Measure Benefit in Cancer Care

Dario Trapani, Medical Oncologist at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO), shared on LinkedIn:

“At ESMO 2026, we explored a paradigm shift in how the benefit of cancer therapies is assessed, including new tools and metrics that better reflect what matters to patients.

Antonella Cardone, CEO of Cancer Patients Europe, presented findings from a study conducted entirely with patients and patient advocates.

The work focused on defining the metrics used to evaluate the benefit of anticancer treatments and communicating to decision-makers, including regulatory agencies, what matters most to people living with cancer.

The discussion goes beyond traditional measures of the quality and quantity of life, highlighting the need to incorporate patient priorities more directly into how treatment benefit is evaluated.

The goal is to move toward more person-centred measures of clinical benefit and endpoints that truly matter to patients.”
