Rille Pihlak: New Science, New Friendships and New Hope for Cancer Patients

Rille Pihlak, Consultant medical oncologist at St Bart’s Hospital in London, shared on LinkedIn:

“ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology Congress 2026 – inspired, motivated, and slightly exhausted!

What an incredible few days in sunny Madrid, surrounded by 40,000+ people passionate about improving cancer care!

A few my own highlights:

  • Graduating from the ESMO Leadership Programme 2025–2026 – an amazing journey of learning and connecting with these extremely inspiring colleagues from around the world (just look at our shiny faces).
  • Mari-Leen Pärn, Kadi Timma Presenting our research on Estonian cancer patients’ views and voices – the first study of its kind, bringing patients’ perspectives and experiences into the international spotlight.
  • Seeing science that changes clinical practice almost overnight! Exciting results that will influence what we do in our clinics tomorrow.
  • Reconnecting with old friends and making new ones – catching up with colleagues from across the globe and enjoying some Madrid sunshine together!

Leaving Madrid incredibly motivated and optimistic about the new treatments coming for our patients.

But first… some much-needed rest after this amazing congress.”
