Lacy Hubbard Shared Breast Cancer Patient Story Highlighting Importance of Screening Initiatives in Rwanda
Lacy Hubbard, President of the Elekta Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Breast Cancer Screening: Works if We Can Reach Her
Bernadette felt a small lump in her chest, but didn’t think it was serious.
She only came to our screening site because there was a free campaign in her hometown.
But the lump was serious. It was breast cancer. Her story isn’t rare.
Like in many low-resource countries, in Rwanda too many women are diagnosed at Stage 3 or 4, when treatment is harder and outcomes are worse. That’s why the World Health Organization’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative calls for 60 percent of breast cancers to be diagnosed and treated in early stages by 2030.
We’re acting.
In just over 2 years, we’ve screened more than 200,000 women for breast cancer.
Our goal is to reach 1 million by 2027.We’ve had strong participation in our mass screening campaigns, especially in rural communities.
But in urban areas, women are often busier, harder to reach, and sometimes less engaged.I’d love to hear your ideas.
How can we motivate more urban women to take part in screening?Watch Bernadette’s story. A lump didn’t feel urgent until it was. Now she encourages others to get screened.”
