Financial Burden Parallels in Cancer Care Between U.S. and Malaysia
Nirmala Bhoo Pathy, Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at University of Malaya, shared a post on LinkedIn by Tingting Zhang, Founder of Hear2Care and Onconomics Inc. and the Chief Executive Officer of ONEiHEALTH, adding:
“While this is US data, the parallels in Malaysia are striking.
Our own patients face catastrophic out-of-pocket expenses, travel long distances for treatment and often skip or delay care due to financial strain.
Yet, we lack consistent national data and a structured response to financial toxicity in cancer care.”
Quoting Tingting Zhang‘s post:
“More US patients worry about financial impacts (95%) than long term side effects (91%) or dying (83%) at diagnosis. 82% experienced financial difficulties in the past 12 months, with 27% delayed in filing prescriptions.
This is a sobering result from the survey released by the Patinet Insight Institute at the National Patient Advocate Foundation “Financial Hardship Hurts Health” Webinar today.”
