Fabio Ynoe de Moraes: Top AI Talent is Turning Away from the U.S. Academia – Sound familiar?

Fabio Ynoe de Moraes, Associate Professor at Queen’s University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“America is Losing Its Doctors – And Its Edge in Medical Innovation

In AI, it’s already happening. Now it’s coming for medicine.

New data show that top AI talent is turning away from the U.S. academia – driven by funding cuts, immigration barriers, and aggressive recruitment by tech giants and sovereign states. Sound familiar?

NIH funding? Slashed.

Physician-scientists? Leaving.

Big Tech? Absorbing researchers and MDs with genomic, neuro, and imaging expertise – not to treat patients, but to power algorithms.

India, Singapore, Canada? Building their own elite MD-PhD pipelines.

U.S. hospitals? Still struggling to keep the best clinicians at the bedside.

The U.S. once attracted the brightest medical minds. Today, that gravitational pull is weakening.

This isn’t just a workforce crisis. It’s a US innovation emergency.

We need a new model to track, protect, and empower MD talent – just like other industries have done for AI.

Imagine a ‘Medical Talent Index’ measuring impact across clinical trials, publications, startups, and care delivery. We must act before the exodus becomes irreversible. We have something on the making here.

Let’s reimagine how we value medical talent. Before Silicon Valley does it for us.

Curious to hear the opinion from:
  • Physician-scientists burned out by academia
  • Medical students thinking twice about the U.S.
  • Health tech leaders hiring MDs into non-clinical roles
  • Global health institutions building homegrown stars.”
