“As I reflect upon the past one year at the WHO Global Breast Cancer Initiative I am overwhelmed by the facts..that this past year alone, 2.3million women have been diagnosed with breast cancer and 670,000 have lost their lives…literally every minute we lose a woman to this disease, the majority, about 70-80% are in low and middle income countries and nearly half of these are premature deaths before the age of 70years. The impact is devastating to families and society at large..
The global breast cancer initiative if implemented could save 2.5M lives by 2040 through mortality reduction. Indeed, the recent investment case by WHO EMR demonstrated a return of between 6.4-7.8 USD for each dollar spent on breast cancer early diagnosis and treatment and an economic loss of USD 408B by 2050 if the status quo persists.
This week hosted the World Economic Forum at Davos as well as the High-Level Dialogue on women’s cancer in Egypt convened by the Presidential Initiative for Women’s Health on the sidelines of the 17th Breast and Gynaecological Cancer International Conference BGICC2025.
I attended the later and it was great interacting with colleagues and friends. It’s amazing to see in Egypt how political goodwill can transform society.. already the key performance indicators are being achieved and with sustained efforts the country will be on track to achieve a 2.5% per year reduction in breast cancer mortality by 2040. This requires collaboration and bringing everyone on board to ensure access to care and universal health coverage is achieved. We urge all governments to adopt and implement the GBCI and save women, generations and build our economies.
The time for action is now..”
