
CANSA Type A Research Funding Programme
The CANSA Type A Research Grant funds research that contributes to cancer control in South Africa across a wide spectrum of topics, including epidemiology, health-seeking behaviour, early detection, treatment, health systems strengthening, and health economics. Research on cancer biology and molecular mechanisms is also eligible if tied to risk reduction, detection, or care.
Eligibility Criteria:

Open to South African citizens or permanent residents only

Must be an independent researcher, preferably with a PhD

Clinical researchers with an MBChB and proven publication record are also eligible

Master’s-level researchers may apply under supervision of a PhD-qualified PI
-
Only one application per applicant per year; only one active grant at a time
-
PI must be based full-time (80% minimum) in South Africa

Research must be conducted at an accredited South African research institution
-
Research Ethics approval is required before funds are released
Funding Details:

Up to ZAR 1,000,000 annually for three years
-
CANSA contributes 75% (ZAR 750,000), and the institution must contribute 25% (ZAR 250,000) per year
-
Grants cover salaries (max 15%), equipment, research assistants, travel (max ZAR 25,000/year for conferences), collaborator visits (max ZAR 15,000/year), publication costs (max ZAR 40,000), and other project-specific expenses

Indirect costs limited to 14%

At least three ISI-accredited publications are expected within four years
