Siobhan Freeney: Why my Breast Cancer was missed on my Screening Mammograms
Siobhan Freeney, Founder of Lobular Ireland and Patient Advocate, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Here’s a Breast Density awareness piece that was produced by Peter Kelly Media Productions a few years ago.
I talk a little about why my Breast Cancer was missed on my Screening Mammograms.
The Radiologists said that they couldn’t see the 4cm Invasive Breast Cancer because I had Dense Breasts “Unseen with Learning Points” they said!
I was diagnosed with Stage 3c Invasive Breast Cancer 6 months after my last Screening Mammogram which was reported as clear.
I had been attending the Breast Cancer Screening Program for 5 years. No one had ever told me I had Dense Breasts or ever mentioned Breast Density to me
Had I been told that I had Dense Breasts I would have been able to make an informed decision about the additional appropriate Imaging that I needed to ensure early detection
Unfortunately my Breast Cancer was missed on several Screening Mammograms. It had been there for 6 – 8 years. It was 7cm at eventual diagnosis and had spread to my Axillary Nodes and Intra Mammary Nodes too
As an Independent Patient Advocate I’m incredibly grateful to Peter Kelly for taking an interest and helping to raise awareness about this Women’s Health issue
Tell Me My Breast Density
There is a Petition for Standardised Breast Density Reporting for ALL Women who go for their Mammogram. Women should be told when their Mammogram indicates that they have Dense Breasts.
Unfortunately Women are not given this information and have no other way of finding out
You can support our efforts to have this changed by adding your name here.”
