Nelson Dusetti: The Complex Interactions Between Neoplastic Cells and the Tumor Microenvironment
Nelson Dusetti, Head of the Translational Research and Innovative Therapies Department at the Cancer Research Centre of Marseille (CRCM), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Thrilled to share that our project PLBIO25, titled ‘Development of an advanced human preclinical model of cancer-induced muscle atrophy (CIMA) to investigate the cross-talk between skeletal muscle and cancer for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes’ has been selected by French National Cancer Institute (INCa) under the 2025 PLBIO call for proposals – Biology and Basic Sciences for Cancer Research.
Our team is deeply interested in the complex interactions between neoplastic cells and the tumor microenvironment. To study them, we have developed sophisticated co-culture systems.
This project naturally extends our efforts by exploring how pancreatic tumors may contribute to systemic effects such as cancer-associated cachexia, an often overlooked but devastating complication in PDAC patients.
This ambitious project aims to develop an advanced human-based preclinical model of cancer-induced muscle atrophy (CIMA) to better understand tumor–skeletal muscle interactions and to promote new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for cancer-associated cachexia.
Our team will actively contribute by providing patient-derived pancreatic cancer models (PDAC) and participating in the development of tumoroid-muscle co-cultures and the multi-omics analysis of treatment effects on muscle integrity. A strong interdisciplinary effort tackling a major unmet clinical need.
Huge thanks to INCa for their support, and congratulations to all consortium members for this great collaborative achievement:
