Jia Liu Highlights Multidisciplinary Advances in Head and Neck Cancer at GP Education Night
Jia Liu, Medical Oncologist Translational Lead at The Kinghorn Cancer Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As a medical oncologist I rarely get an opportunity to contribute to cancer prevention and early detection which is so important to improving outcomes.
Last night it was a pleasure to join Dion Forstner, Peter Floros and Brett Leavers on a GP Education Night hosted by St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney and sponsored by GenesisCare to:
Raise awareness about the early investigation and referral pathways for neck lumps especially lateral neck lumps
Changing demographic and face of head and neck cancer, surgical innovations including TORS to resect cancers with reduced surgical morbidity
Innovations and role of radiotherapy
Role of Head and Neck Cancer Australia in GP and patient advocacy and support
Emerging role of immunotherapy, established in the advanced setting but increasing evidence in the neoadjuvant setting, and the issues regarding long-term toxicity and hopefully increased survivorship we will see with improvements in systemic therapy.”
Julie McCrossin, Broadcaster, Cancer Survivor and Community Educator, shared this post, adding:
“Thank you so much to everyone involved in this vital GP Education night. Like many other Head and Neck cancer patients, I presented to my GP several times with classic symptoms of throat cancer (oropharyngeal cancer), including lumps on my neck, but I was not referred to an ENT Surgeon for the essential test to diagnose my tumour.
A test that GPs don’t have the equipment to do. I feel very emotional seeing this education session because I do not doubt it will save lives.”
