Nirmala Bhoo Pathy: Privilege to Speak at the National Healthcare Forum 2025

Nirmala Bhoo Pathy, Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at University of Malaya, posted on LinkedIn:

“What a privilege to speak at the National Healthcare Forum 2025 on “Can Malaysia Make Healthcare Affordable Again?” alongside Khairy Jamaluddin, Lee Boon Chye, Mark O’Dell, Dr. Thirunavukarasu, Aneil Moorthy, Manvir Victor.
My take? Rising healthcare costs are not just about hospital bills. We are forgetting the patients and their families.
1. We must confront health system inefficiencies that quietly shift the cost burden onto patients such as referral delays, multiple unnecessary hospital visits, downtime of critical technologies like radiotherapy and MRI, and unwarranted variation in clinical practice.
2. We need smarter drug policies: ASEAN level procurement (I mean why not?), investment on generics and biosimilars, and stronger public sector supply chains.
3. And we must acknowledge and address the real costs that patients bear every day—travel, childcare, income loss, underinsurance, red tape, and more.
So proud of our undergraduate student union from Faculty of Medicine Universiti Malaya for organising such a professional, impactful event.”
